Why should I use a rinse after
using a shampoo bar? My hair feels “weird” after using
a shampoo bar for the first time – what’s wrong? Do I need to use a conditioner? Can I use a shampoo bar if I color or perm my hair? Can I order them by
mail order? What other products
do you have that complement your shampoo bars? What are your prices
for the shampoo bars and other hair care products? Shampoo FAQ There has been a lot of interest lately in my shampoo
bars, which I introduced at my farmers markets in 2009. They are a true soap but are made with a
different blend of oils than my bath soap.
What are the advantages of using a solid shampoo bar rather than a
commercial shampoo? My shampoo bar
does not contain any SLS or SLES, petroleum by-products, preservatives,
fillers, alcohol, artificial fragrances or colors. They are economical to use because they
last a very long time if you keep them dry between uses, in a dish or wire
shower caddy. ▲TOP What is a shampoo bar? A shampoo soap bar is a type of soap that is formulated to
clean the hair and differs from body soap due to the blend of oils and degree
of superfat used. Most artisan soap is
made by either the cold process or the hot process method. The cold process allows more choice in
color and design but hot process allows more immediate control over the
process of saponification, which is why I prefer it for my shampoo bars. After the fully cooked soap is checked for
mildness, the superfatting oil is added – remaining intact as moisturizing
oil in the finished product because there is no more lye left to turn it into
soap. I use fair trade Moroccan
argan oil as my superfatting oil, particularly rich in linoleic acids and vitamin
E and prized in the Middle East for skin and hair care. I make no medical claims for any of my products but I'm
delighted that so many people find they work well for them. If you are trying to get away from products
with SLS and SLES, etc., if you want something convenient for travel and at a
good price-for-value, then I hope you will be pleased when you try them. ▲TOP I start with a cold infusion of marshmallow herb root and
leaf, with which I prepare a sodium hydroxide solution. The base oils I use for the shampoo bar are
primarily shea butter, castor oil, coconut oil and olive oil, with honey and
dissolved silk. It’s scented with a
blend of plant essential oils:
lavender, orange, rosemary and ylang ylang – a fresh, sunny, slightly floral
scent. The rustic appearance of the
finished bar is due to the hot-process method used to make this particular
soap: this method allows me to neutralize the sodium hydroxide before adding
the Moroccan argan oil, which remains intact in the finished soap as the
moisturizing oil. There is no color
added to the soap but the honey gives the finished bar a warm light brown
hue. My shampoo bars contain no SLS or SLES.
▲TOP Why should I use a rinse after
using a shampoo bar? Shampoo soap is naturally alkaline but healthy hair and
skin has a slightly acidic pH. Rinsing
out the shampoo soap well is very important, and following up with a dilute
acidic rinse using vinegar, lemon juice or citric acid will restore the
correct pH to the hair and cause the hair cuticle to lie flat, making the
hair shiny and easier to
detangle. Men and women with very
short hair often don’t need to use the rinse, but those with longer hair will
find it helpful. ▲TOP My hair feels “weird”
after using a shampoo bar for the first time – what’s wrong? If you have been using shampoo with silicones and protein
in them, you may have a coating on your hair that causes the shampoo bar to
feel gummy or sticky in your hair.
Most people have a period of adjustment that can last from a few days
to a few weeks before their hair adjusts to the new regimen. Don’t be too quick to give up - you may be
surprised by how much you like it after a few washes. ▲TOP Do I need to use a
conditioner? I prefer to use a few drops of oil, rubbed between my hands
and applied to the ends and then the crown as my hair dries. But there is no reason not to combine
natural and traditional hair care methods and if you like using your regular
conditioner after shampooing, you can.
▲TOP Can I use a shampoo
bar if I color or perm my hair? I think it depends on the condition of your hair, if it is
damaged or healthy, and the type of process used on your hair. I recommend a strand test with hair taken
from your brush or comb, before trying any new product and consult your
hairdresser if in doubt. ▲TOP Can I purchase
shampoo bars by mail order? Yes! The least expensive way to send them (in the
continental U.S.A.) is in a padded envelope mailer, I can fit one or two bars
in 00 size envelope and the shipping cost is determined by its weight but
should be under $4. A small flat rate box can hold up to six shampoo
bars or bath soap and shipping costs $5.65 with delivery confirmation,
regardless of weight variations.
International shipping costs must be calculated on a case-by-case
basis. ▲TOP What other products do you have
that complement your shampoo bars? Other Hair Care Products. To go with our new shampoo bars, we
recommend a mild acidic HAIR RINSE, such as our infused herbal apple
cider vinegars: CALENDULA & CHAMOMILE,
THREE FLOWERS, or HERBAL. Comb out the tangles with a NATURAL WOODEN COMB, and
condition with a lavender-scented HAIR OIL made with Moroccan argan oil,
virgin coconut oil, herbal infusions and shea oil: for daily
conditioning and occasional hot oil treatments. ▲TOP What are your prices for the
shampoo bars and other hair care products? Shampoo Bar $7 Hair Rinse $9.75 Hair Oil $12.75 Wooden Comb $5 Gift Sets available: Inquire All prices include 6% Maryland
sales tax when applicable. Price will
be adjusted for out-of-state mail orders. |
